Sara Bharwani, Founder
Sara Bharwani is the head of Breathe Better Air, a campaign that works on environmental issues and sustainability for the Island of St Maarten. After Hurricane Irma, a fire began raging on the only landfill on the island from the debris dumped there. It lasted almost the entire year. The burning smoke affected Sara’s health, and she started a campaign to raise awareness about the fire, which was also causing health issues for residents on the island. Because of her efforts alongside other concerned environmental NGOs, the World Bank intervened and eventually extinguished the Dump fires. She continued her activism by bringing awareness to alternatives to single-use plastics, and in November 2020, Parliament passed a law banning single-use plastics. She is the Governor of St Maarten Youth Award recipient, a Parliamentary Youth Council Member, and now, a children’s book author.
